Expert review of Portas Do Sol

The best place in Lisbon for long liquid lunches in the sunshine.

It's all about outdoor eating and drinking here, where folk lounge away hours in the comfy black sofas on the sprawling concrete terrace, surrounded by the historic roof-tops, church spires and the gleaming river below. Whenever I come for lunch, I always end up staying for dinner.

Food and drink:

Nothing flashy is served, just simple salads, sandwiches and burgers. The cocktails are excellent – I always go for a caipirinha around sunset.

Ambience:

It's pretty casual here – as afternoon turns into evening the vibe picks up with dancing and DJ's inside.

Service:

On the whole the staff are very pleasant. However, I've noticed that they can be a little understaffed when it gets busy, making for a bit of wait between bottles of wine and other refills.

Location:

In the middle of the Alfama district – right next to the main tram stop – with stunning views around the city.

Price advice:

Sandwiches and salads are around the 10 euros mark but the bill always adds up after a few bottles of wine.

Tables to book:

You can't book any tables but get there early to grab one of the comfy sofas.
