Expert review of 1 de Maio
This is the place to come for typically no-nonsense Portuguese dining. You’ll find it by a lit-up window full of fresh fish at the foot of a Bairro Alto cobbled hill. Diners are crammed into elbow-to-elbow tables, where all-white tiles and the ever-bright lighting are a bit unflattering and harsh – but it’s all part of this very local experience.
This place serves simple and honest Portuguese food such as hearty soups, fresh fish dishes and sweet and sticky puddings.
Everything about this place is unfussy and informal, however it has erred on the side of being a bit touristy of late.
The waiters are always efficient, informative and speak good English.
In Bairro Alto. At the bottom of the Rua Da Atalaia hill. The entrance is very inconspicuous, so keep your eyes open.
It’s very affordable. It’d be very hard to spend more than 30 euros pp on three-courses, including wine.
