Expert review of First Food & Bar

American classics with a twist at this laid back treasure.

First things first: I love First Food & Bar. I love that it's open late, I love that it has three head chefs, each of which has created his own part of the menu inspired by his heritage, and I love the food. Yes, at first glance it's a little pricey for what you assume should be cheap dishes - fish and chips, nachos and the like - but it only takes one bite to realise they're of a much higher standard than your normal fare. And it's so fun! It's one of my favourite places in Vegas.

Food and drink:

American dishes with a twist - think Philly cheesesteak dumplings, nachos made from plantain chips with raw tuna on top, and the best steak and eggs you'll ever have - with chorizo. There's plenty of Italian food on the menu, too, and an excellent choice for vegetarians.

The drinks are fantastic, and the names are even better (you will have to visit to see why).

Recommended dishes:

The blackened skirt steak is the closest to perfection dish that I've had out here. It comes with chorizo, a spicy sauce and two fried eggs on top - and it's heaven. I also love the red eye mojito - a sour cherry cocktail.

Ambience:

Incredibly relaxed - the door staff never make an issue about there being room and the bar staff are fantastic - in fact, I prefer to eat in the bar area (there are tables). People wear whatever they like, from posh dresses to shorts and t-shirts. The clientele is varied, but pretty trendy. It's a great place to eat alone - especially if you're up by the bar.

Service:

If you eat at the bar, service is excellent. I tend to find the waiters in the main restaurant either sloppy or forgetful. Either way, though, food comes out quickly.

Location:

In the Shoppes at the Palazzo, overlooking the Wynn and Treasure Island (it's bang on the Strip).

Price advice:

Mains from US$13, but they're mainly in the US$20s and go up to about US$30.

Tables to book:

Either sit by the bar for a fun time, or get a window booth for stunning views of the Strip.
