Expert review of Kafe Ara
There’s no shortage of cafes in my central neighbourhood of Beyoğlu, but Ara’s atmospheric setting, relaxed vibe, good coffee, drinks, and reliable food make it one I return to again and again.
Hearty salads – I like the one with grilled chicken – sandwiches, pastas, and a melting pot of other dishes, from “Balkan” meatballs and Turkish mantı (a ravioli-type dish in a garlic-yogurt sauce) to a respectable chicken tikka. No alcohol is served.
The large courtyard is usually thronged with locals, while the funky, multi-level interior, with its wood floors, clusters of knick-knacks, and big black-and-white images by namesake photographer Ara Güler, is warm and intimate.
The casual service isn’t particularly attentive, but this is a place to go when you want to linger anyway.
On its own little side street, tucked away off the centre of İstiklal Caddesi, near Galatasaray High School, a local landmark.
Main courses range from 15 lira to 22 lira.
