Expert review of 5. Kat
This trendy rooftop establishment – its name means “fifth floor” – is popular both as a place to enjoy eclectic cuisine and as a hip late-night venue for drinks and dancing.
The international menu offers a little bit of everything, all generally good if not outstanding. I’m most tempted by the hard-to-find Asian-influenced dishes, such as Madras curry chicken or Cambodian-style sea bass with ginger sauce. 5. Kat serves alcohol.
The big outdoor terrace is the prime location in good weather, but the funky interior is just as inviting, with its red walls, fabric-draped ceilings, arched doorways, big chandeliers, and velvet-covered furniture. Draws a lively, youngish crowd.
Service is professional and friendly.
On the top floor of an unassuming-looking building in the quiet backstreets of Beyoğlu’s popular Cihangir neighbourhood.
Main dishes range from 18.50 lira to 47 lira. A fixed-price three-course menu is available for 65 lira to 155 lira depending on what, and how much, you drink. A Sunday brunch buffet (open from 11am to 3pm) is 30 lira per head.
