Expert review of Barista Jam
The problem with Hong Kong's chain coffee shops is that they're chains. Step forward William So, pioneer founder of Barista Jam and a man on a mission to provide a rather better cuppa Java. About time.
So, you're primarily here for the coffee, of which there is a palatable gallimaufry ranged about the place. They also do salad, sandwiches, pasta, and patisserie, in case you are feeling peckish. These are made with the same care and passion that goes into the coffee - so for a meal or a snack, BJ fills the bill.
As well as the regular range of coffee, there are usually some guest blends which are worth experimenting with.
It's not quite Messianic, but there is a touch of new wave, at least. Better still, it's somewhere locals love to come and hang out.
Ask and you will receive a whole treatise on all things coffee.
Sheung Wan's the (not terribly) wild west of Hong Kong. The streets around are photogenic and entertaining. I am quite happy to make a side trip to the area just for a quick BJ, so to speak.
HK$24 for a cup - more bucks than Starbucks but, oh, so much better.
