Best for Trendiness - Expert review of The Grill Room at the Square

Private members club boasting Glasgow’s best range of steaks and grills.

This is the best steakhouse in the city bar none and a meat lover’s heaven. Clutching a gigantic meat cleaver to its breast as though it were a feather, this steakhouse is part of a new trend of carnivorous restaurants as championed by the back-to-basics TV chefs. One of the city’s newest fine dining establishments, The Grill Room has firmly established itself as a firm favourite with wealthy meat eaters, the city’s butchers and the oh-so-thankful regional farmers. If I had a cow-shaped pile of money, I’d gorge myself on its award-winning £60 18oz Chateaubriand steak – but alas no. I can still dream.

Food and drink:

The Grill Room’s prime steaks are dry-aged for tenderness and flavour and are hand cut on the premises daily, ensuring they’re fresh and worth every pound. The menu promises well-marbled 16oz bone in rib eye steak, 14oz Kansas City style bone in strip sirloin steak, Popeseye and fillet steaks and double cut fillet mignon. If you can find a better steak in Glasgow I’ll turn vegetarian. Token poultry, fish and vegetarian dishes complete the menu – although that’s not really why you’d go is it?

Recommended dishes:

The 36oz Porterhouse Steak, for two people to share, is a prime cut incorporating the sirloin and the fillet head. I don’t think this is ideal territory for a first date – especially not with a vegan or vegetarian – but oh-my-God it looks incredible.

Ambience:

As in keeping with its private members club status, it is a sophisticated, sultry affair.

Service:

Award winning. Be prepared to pay from the hip or get someone else – ideally your boss – to cover the hefty bill.

Location:

Overlooking Royal Exchange Square, this is one of the city’s premier addresses.

Price advice:

Expensive. Take a credit card and a good sense of humour.

Tables to book:

It has a rooftop marquee, which can hold up to 40 diners – ideal for corporate functions.
