Expert review of Lizarran
I’m not normally a fan of franchised restaurants or bars but this is a rare case where I’m happy to make an exception. I first discovered the Basque chain Lizarran in Barcelona and their tapas and pintxos/montaditos (different food combinations literally mounted on small pieces of baguette-style bread) are really very good indeed.
The Basques are famous for their tapas and pintxos and there’s a great selection from tortilla (Spanish omelette) with green peppers, chicken wings, prawns, patatas bravas and jamon iberico.
This isn’t a place to spend to leisurely spend an evening. It’s a lively, modern bar and can get crowded on weekend evenings so you stand or sit at the bar, have your tapas or montaditos and move on to the next bar.
The staff are young and helpful although you might have to wait a while, like any bar really, at weekend evenings and peak times.
It's under the cloisters of the main Plaça Independència square.
Montaditos cost 1.55 euros each.
There are Lizarran franchises in Barcelona and numerous other cities, including New York and Los Angeles - see the website for details.
