Expert review of Rivoire
A morning cappuccino, afternoon hot chocolate or early evening Campari Soda on Rivoire’s fabulous terrace overlooking the Palazzo Vecchio is a must for visitors to Florence. Founded in 1872 as a chocolate factory, it has maintained its period appearance and is arguably the city’s most elegant café and an excellent spot for people watching.
The fresh pastries and cakes are delicious and there are some good sandwiches too. Chocolate is still a speciality and they do some wonderfully creative things with it at Christmas and Easter. The hot chocolate, so dense that your spoon will stand up on its own, is to die for and comes topped with whipped cream.
The old-world feel of Rivoire is more evident in winter when it’s not crowded with tourists, but at any time of year, it smacks of times past with its gorgeous window displays, old wood bar counter and cabinets and crisp table cloths.
The service is of the old-school variety with white-jacketed waiters.
It's in the thick of things on Piazza della Signoria opposite Palazzo Vecchio.
Be aware that you will be charged through the nose for anything ordered sitting down, be it inside or out. A cappuccino at the bar costs 1.40 euros; sitting down it's a whopping 5.50 euros, but it’s worth it at least once.
