Best for Families - Expert review of Grom
The Florentines have very strong opinions about where to get the best gelato in the city; I’m just a humble foreigner, but this is my favourite. A relative newcomer, Grom is part of a chain that originated in Turin and which has branches as far afield as New York, Paris and Tokyo; it stands out for the quality of its raw ingredients, many of which are organic.
While some of the flavours are constants, others are based on seasonal ingredients. The superb Crema di Grom made with organic eggs and Valrhona chocolate is a year-round classic, as is the pistacchio (made with the celebrated Bronte pistachios from Sicily), while winter warmers (does that make sense?!) include marron glacé and mandarin and summertime refreshers feature fruity flavours such as melon sorbet. In winter, there is also a superb hot chocolate.
It's a contemporary take on a traditional gelateria complete with old-fashioned ice cream churns. It's standing room only (although there’s a useful stone bench just outside).
Young, black clad staff dole out the ice cream with a smile.
It's tucked away on a quiet backstreet just south of Il Duomo (Cathedral) , perfectly placed for a post sight-seeing pick-me-up.
Cones and cups cost between 2 and 5 euros.
