Expert review of Thornton's
The last time I ate here, after six courses and three hours, I was planning my next visit because the dishes (and wine) are so out of this world that Thornton’s has the potential to become an addiction. It’s a connoisseur’s dream. Yes it's expensive, but for the experience, money well spent in my opinion. Kevin Thornton is a consummate chef who takes his food seriously, just don't ask for chips with your meal - he’s not a fan. He even brews his own poítin.
My amuse bouche of fish was still smoking when it arrived at the table, this is a live performance by a Michelin chef. There are three tasting menus (5, 8 or 14 courses) if you really want to taste the genius of Kevin Thornton’s work. Delectable seafood, stunning desserts...it’s all exquisite, as is the wine menu. Sublime.
Dishes change regularly, but my trio of tuna was outstanding on my last visit.
My one gripe is the space itself, it can be a little staid if the restaurant isn’t full. The overall effect lacks a bit of character.
The waiting staff have personality and aren’t afraid to show it so you're treated to fine service with a bit of spirit.
It's upstairs in the The Fitzwilliam Hotel where window seats look across to Stephen’s Green, at the top of Grafton Street.
Lunch from 25-49 euros is the best deal, or dinner at 79 euros is fantastic value for the standard of the food. The most affordable option? Order a cheese board in the bar and watch the master work through the hole in the wall!
Request a window seat with views of Stephen's Green. Or book the chef's table for interaction with the chef and the kitchen.
