Best for Dining alone - Expert review of Ely Wine Bar

Excellent wine, organic food, a relaxed mood, Ely is one of Dublin’s most atmospheric spaces.

For romance, a gossip, or an intense chat, you can't go wrong at Ely Wine bar. I love it. This Dublin star is one of the few places that appeals to all. Simple things are done to perfection – wonderful wine, champagne, sherry etc, and great food, the mood is convivial and the setting is comfortable. Ok, you’ll spend a little more than average, but it’s worth it.

Food and drink: 

There is a superb wine list with informed and educated staff to advise you. Delicious, organic food is sourced from the owner’s own farm in County Clare, along with locally caught seafood - it's a superior choice across the board. You won’t want to leave.

Recommended dishes: 

The burger and chips are lip-smacking, and always hit the spot. The oysters are popular too.

Ambience: 

Cavernous surroundings, especially downstairs, evoke an authentic wine bar experience – you could be in Italy or France! Relaxed, upbeat staff keep spirits up. Relax in style.

Service: 

There are well-informed staff when it comes to the wine and service is fast, informal and friendly.

Location: 

There are two more city centre branches as well as this flagship location on Ely Place, just off Baggot Street.

Price advice: 

An early bird menu offers the best value, with two courses for 24.95 euros, or there’s a bar menu offering tasty snacks for approximately 10 euros each.

Tables to book: 

Tables downstairs are the most fun and romantic.

There is Ely bar and brasserie on Custom House Quay, Dublin 1, as well as Ely gastro pub, Grand Canal Square. Both are equally great options with consistent standards.
