Expert review of Hoi An
As far as I know, Hoi An is the only Vietnamese in town. Thankfully, this doesn't really matter, because it's absolutely brilliant, with sublime dishes served in an intimate, cosy setting. The location might not lend any views to Dubai's towers or beaches, but the dishes - including wok-seared cognac steak (a personal favourite) - more than make up for this.
While the menu does occasionally stray into other South East Asian countries, it's mainly sticks true to its Vietnamese name, with a few healthy nods to those French Indochinese colonialists as well.
The four course set menus are a good way to enjoy a fully rounded experience without too much menu-fussing.
Quiet and cosy, Hoi An manages to stay formal, but still very friendly, with Vietnamese lanterns scattered liberally about.
Extremely attentive and friendly.
Hoi An sits on the first floor of the Shangri-La hotel, sat on Dubai's main artery, the Sheikh Zayed Road.
A set menu costs around 280 dirhams, but individual dishes will set you back about 60-120 dirhams.
