Expert review of Convivio
In one sense Convivio is bucking the trend of a beautiful restaurant – with its large sparkly wine glasses, ornate mirrors that take over the walls, immaculately-presented staff and crisp white linen tablecloths - because the food is plentiful, there are no miniscule portions here. The white paper tablecloths that sit on top of the white linen are a bit of a let-down though.
I’ve given Convivio a boost up the Chester restaurant rankings following a competent lunch visit in late September 2010 with 17 fellow diners. While “service with a smile” isn’t a cliché I’d happily use here, it was at least speedy and efficient – we were in, fed, paid up and leaving within an hour.
Italian, Greek, Spanish...all sorts of Med flavours are present on the massive menu. My saffron cream ravioli with asparagus could have done with more seasoning and less saffron but was otherwise perfect. And while seafood on a pizza doesn’t do it for me, my dining partner was thrilled with the combination. The house rosé is creamy and delicious.
The huge calzone for a fiver at lunchtime is a steal.
The historic building is fantastic and adds to the refined air. Clientele is smartly-dressed locals, and it’s a great special occasion place.
Immaculate, crisp uniforms adorn knowledgeable waiting staff.
On a junction of a big traffic island on Chester’s Ring Road; it’s the edge of the city centre.
The express lunch is a steal with many dishes for £5 (noon until 4pm). On the main menu, pizza and pasta dishes average around £11, food off the grill about £18.
