Expert review of Canteen On Clifton Street
A slow-cooked city secret that excels its humble name
Don’t be fooled by the name, Canteen is a far cry from chips and hotdogs. Their chef Wayne Thomas changes the menu every fortnight, each dish spinning a fun twist on a recognisable recipe. With a strong emphasis on vegetarian and local produce, I love this progressive independent bistro - it’s a jewel in an oft-ignored neighbourhood’s crown.
Food and drink:
There’s usually just three or four dishes per course, Canteen seem to identify a taste to suit everyone, every time they change the menu. Expect a good balance of hearty and spicy, international and traditional. Their drink menu proudly sports some of the country’s local whiskey and beers, too.
Recommended dishes:
Every visit is different thanks to the fortnightly selection shuffle. My last visit involved a terrific Thai beetroot, coconut and black cumin soup, so that’s recommended if you see it pop up on the menu again!
Ambience:
The mood is always relaxed and light hearted. Privacy can be found over the small tables, even when it’s pretty busy.
Service:
The staff are always chirpy and informal without being professional. The menu’s slim choices ensure speedy table service too.
Location:
Clifton Street has recently been made one way and it’s had a strange effect on the once lively, hectic road. Now depleted in vibrancy and character, it’s not one of Cardiff’s best thoroughfares but it’s only a 20 minute walk from the city centre or about half that in a cab.
