Expert review of Aurora
Aurora is the sort of place where you might spot a film star, famous model or footballer - if not sitting beside you, then certainly on the walls, as photographic evidence of this place's popularity is all around. Booking is essential: rumour has it that, a few years back, even Uma Thurman had to hang around on Via Fuorlovado while she waited for a table.
The menu concentrates on simple food where the ingredients speak for themselves: tagliata of beef, pezzogna in a crust of potato with spinach (with olives and pine nuts), spaghetti alle vongole (veraci). There is even a 'light pizza' on the menu for the fashionista who is watching her (or his) weight. Meals begin with fabulous breads, focaccia and square crisps, and end with a complimentary plate of little almond crunch dolci (sweets). A good wine list includes a decent number of wines by the glass.
In spite of the all-star cast (I've sat next to Sly Stallone, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, photographically-speaking, that is), Aurora is a remarkably cosy operation. Relatively recently modernised, the place is now simply decorated with banquette seating, black wood tables and linen tablecloths, with only the photos to decorate the walls.
The staff are remarkably friendly and attentive.
Aurora used to be situated in Castiglione but is now handily situated on the Via Fuorlovado and so convenient for those who are taking a break from shopping and sightseeing. Three generations of the D'Alessio family have run the restaurant.
Of course it isn't cheap: for a simple fish dish and a glass of wine the bill will be around 45 euros. Those famous pizzas are around 18 euros.
