Expert review of Salt

Enjoy designer surrounds, drinks and tapas with extraordinary ocean views.

This seaside restaurant may well be one of the sexiest in the city. It's situated in the Ambassador Hotel and is perched above the rocks looking out onto the sparkling Atlantic. A romantic dinner destination of note, it's also popular for wine-fuelled lunches and early evening tapas and bubbles.

Food and drink:

You'll find a modern European menu with Mediterranean influences, especially evident on the tapas menu, and oysters galore. Big hitting local wines feature too.

Recommended dishes:

I'm a sucker for oysters, Champagne and a view and you'll find all three in abundance here. That said, the grilled asparagus starter with poached egg is a winner and the linefish I last had here with a slick of orange infused beurre blanc was sublime. There's a focus on lightness in the saucing and flavour marriages which I really like here. The desserts are inspired.

Ambience:

Sophisticated and elegant with a cosmopolitan sheen.

Service:

Attentive.

Location:

Ambassador Hotel, Bantry Bay.

Price advice:

Main courses are, on average, 130 rand. Lunch menu offerings are around the 100 rand mark.

Tables to book:

Only tables in the window will do for dinner.
