Expert review of La Colombe
An invitation to dine at La Colombe is always a treat and one I never turn down. If we have a special occasion dinner coming up, this restaurant always comes to mind first but thanks to a slew of awards over the past few years, getting a table is a tricky feat. This is one of my all time favourite restaurants - the quality of food and wine pairings is outstanding, the flavour marriages are superb and service is simply sublime.
A strong French thread runs throughout the menu but with a healthy peppering of Asian as well as some South African twists. Estate and Constantia Valley wines are served.
The blackboard menu changes regularly and with the seasons. Choose from the multi-course degustation experience which follows a conceptual theme or feast on the likes of foie gras terrine with dustings of cocoa, carpaccio and seared tartare of springbok, a decadent lamb and sweetbreads duo with a slick of red wine jus or the prawn, quail and corn fricasee. Every dish is a sublime and considered marriage of flavours.
The restaurant is a sun-splashed space bordering a garden and a pond (complete with resident ducks) - it is like a conservatory in a smart country house.
In my opinion, among the best in Cape Town. It's clear that staff here relish their jobs in one of the city's best restaurants.
Constantia Uitsig Estate.
Main courses 165 rand. Winter multi-course specials are a longstanding tradition.
I like the private room for bigger tables but the window tables are also a favourite. Summer calls for outdoors.
