Best for Cheap eats - Expert review of Chandani
There are smart Indian restaurants in and around the city but I love the charm and sparkly surrounds of this unpretentious spot. Owner Jagdish, originally from Bangladesh, lives, eats and breathes his business and the passion can be tasted in the outstanding cuisine prepared by his chefs.
Indian offerings in numerous guises - from the kormas for those who prefer to take things easy to tikka, tandoori and a host of moreish curries. This restaurant is a delight if you're a vegetarian. The wine list is contained and there are lassis too.
The list is enormous so order different dishes and share. I love the black lentil kali dal but am also partial to the well balanced lamb rogan josh. Best is to tell your waiter what you're in the mood for and let him take care of things. That said, the jhinga masala prawns are fabulous. And don't forget the onion naan breads.
Cosy and welcoming. There is a laid-back and convivial atmosphere in this renovated Victorian home.
Swift, friendly and knowledgeable.
Woodstock, a gritty suburb on the city outskirts.
Main courses are, on average, 60 rand.
