Expert review of Caveau
Caveau hits the spot on many levels. It's situated in the Josephine Mill, perched above the Liesbeek River and under a canopy of trees and is the haunt of many a local businessman, yummy mummies on a cheeky lunch and couples popping out for a midweek bite to eat. The breakfasts and brunches are legendary but I'm a fan of an early supper on the deck outside, glass of wine in hand.
Robust tapas offerings with a level of sophistication are served as well as heartier main courses with a rustic European twist. As befits the name, excellent wines are on offer too, and many by the glass.
The blackboard menu changes often and with the seasons but there are signatures like the cubes of beef with béarnaise sauce, steamed mussels and prawn risotto that remain favourites. The eggs Benedict for breakfast and brunch has fans far and wide while I love their kidneys, cassoulet and slow braised veal osso bucco. Deli cheese and charcuterie platters are ideal for sharing.
Laid back with a sheen of sophistication. A buzz of conversation and laughter is always audible. On sporting match days, it's crammed.
The owners are hands on and passionate and this shows in the staff's attitude and food and wine knowledge.
Josephine Mill, Newlands.
Main courses are, on average, 95 rand.
Outside and under the trees if the weather's good.
