Best for Families - Expert review of L'Ondine Plage

Among the best beach restaurants in Cannes, and certainly the peachiest.

You can’t miss the Ondine. It’s a flotilla of peach-coloured loungers, parasols and table cloths packed in around the bridgehead of the main restaurant building. Oh and, of course, it’s right on the beach.

So are quite a few other Cannes restaurants but there aren’t many better than this.

It’s not the cheapest but l’Ondine hasn’t let the fact of being an olive-stone spit from the sea interfere with the serving of some really very classy dishes. Chef Jean-Pierre Silva is particularly good on fish – notably lobster and red mullet – but can also come up with a nice grilled quail salad.

And eating all this with the Med at your elbow may not quite be decadent, but it doesn’t fall far short. The office never seemed further away.

Plus which, of course, the nippers can be fed and then let loose on the beach - while you finish the wine and take the time for erudite conversation, as all young parents long to do.

Food and drink:

Classic Mediterranean fish dishes - lobster is a speciality - with a certain variety and panache, alongside a fair sprinkling of decent meats. Beef rossini might tempt, if you've already had enough fish for one short break.

Ambience:

Sunny, bright and even a touch glam. Also nice to see a mix of people in beach wraps and others in business shirts or blouses.

Service:

Friendly and usually effective.

Location:

On the beach.

Price advice:

Starters are from around 10 euros, mains from 23.50 euros and desserts from 11.20 euros. So, if you go the full three courses, with some wine and coffee, you’re not going to get out under  56 euros-a-head. Then again, nothing obliges you to have three courses.
