Expert review of Bagolyvar
The turreted, Transylvanian-style ‘Owl’s Castle’ is a family-friendly restaurant that aims to cater for visitors to the nearby Budapest Zoo. Following the principle that mothers and grandmothers are responsible for the cream of home cooking, the restaurant is run by an all-female team.
The emphasis is on traditional Hungarian cuisine; this is a good place to sample classics like goulash soup, Hortobágy pancakes and veal stew with dumplings. Save some space for a strudel dessert.
In keeping with its focus upon good old-fashioned values, the restaurant is decked out like a middle-class dining room of the 1920s, with panelled walls, net curtains and a big wooden dresser. However, there’s also a large outdoor terrace, and the whole atmosphere is comfortable and laid back.
The all-female waiting staff are attentive and efficient.
In City Park, just behind Heroes' Square and City Park and adjacent to the zoo.
The menu is very reasonably priced, with most main courses falling below 3,000 forints.
Next door is Gundel, the Bagolyvár’s renowned and exclusive sister restaurant.
