Expert review of Tiandi Yijia

Exquisite contemporary Chinese in a VIP spot beside the Forbidden City.

I’d cycled past this place dozens of times and always assumed it was a private government club due to the shifty, suited bodyguard types outside. It’s not – rather it’s a singular, luxurious Chinese dining experience for anyone who can afford it.

Food and drink:

Creative Imperial and Chinese fare that mixes classical traditions and techniques with unusual ingredient combinations. Try the foie gras with sake and the lao Beijing style appetizers.

Ambience:

Beautiful, under-lit environment, though it’s so expansive it can feel a little empty on quiet nights.

Service:

Accomplished and ever so slightly snooty - unsurprising for a place that takes itself so seriously.

Location:

Close to the southeast corner of the Forbidden City.

Price advice:

High end prices, especially the wine list.
