Expert review of Patara

Beijing’s best Thai food in an opulent setting.

In my experience, Thai food in Beijing is mostly just Chinese with a splash of fish sauce and an extra zero added to the price tag. Patara, however, is a shining exception. With reputable branches in London and elsewhere, the high-end international chain delivers authentic fresh dishes, with the emphasis on seafood.

Food and drink:

It’s hard to go wrong with such a compact, tasty menu. Make sure you start with soft shell crab with green apple salsa (green mango is impossible to get, they tell me). I love the creative scallop curried mousse, trussed up in a banana leaf, and the mild chicken massaman curry is a good option for daintier palates or kids.

Ambience:

Subdued and elegant – you’ll soon forget you’re sitting above a shopping mall.

Service:

Very good - clearly this is a restaurant with an international pedigree.

Location:

One floor above Dadong. Very handy if you’re staying in The Regent of Park Plaza – though convenient to anywhere in Wangfujing.

Price advice:

A special occasion restaurant, but it won’t break the bank. Dinner for two with drinks should cost in the region of RMB 400-600.
