Best for Families - Expert review of The Walrus and Carpenter

Well-established family-run restaurant near Bath's Theatre Royal.

The Walrus and Carpenter is a real Bath institution. Established in 1974, my parents were coming here before I was even born and I don’t think they’ve really changed the menu since then. They’ve had no need to though and are still serving up hearty veggie dishes and great burgers in a slightly eccentric setting.

Food and drink:

Good old fashioned dishes like chilli con carne and burgers are on the menu, which is split into 'befores', 'mains' and 'afters'. Veggies have lots of old-school options including mushroom moussaka, nutloaf and spinach lasagne. There’s an extensive wine list, cocktail menu and tasty homemade milkshakes for the kids.

Recommended dishes:

I daydream about how good the avocado and blue cheese ‘before’ is and when I was a veggie a few years ago I used to love the moussaka. Now I’ve gone over to the dark side I love the juicy hefty burgers made from local beef, the rustic side salads and homemade coleslaw.

Ambience:

Charming shabby chic - with blue gingham table clothes, candles melting in bottles and walls adorned with posters, there’s a retro feel to the dinky restaurant, but it can be a romantic place for a quirky date and is great for relaxed celebrations.

Service:

Family-run by the Robinson clan, service is friendly and informal.

Location:

Just across the road and up the hill from the Theatre Royal on the way to Queen’s Square.

Price advice:

‘Befores’ start at £4.95, a basic beef burger will set you back £8.65, veggie main meals cost from £11.20 and ‘afters’ are from £5.75.

Tables to book:

In the summer ask for one by the door in the corner upstairs to get some natural air-con.

Other useful branches:

A few years ago a second Walrus and Carpenter opened in Regent Street, Clifton, Bristol - much to my delight as I was living there at the time. See the website for more details.
