Expert review of Wushu
This is my go-to restaurant for a quick, cheap and tasty lunch, and one of mysteriously few places serving good Asian food in Barcelona. Brad is a great chef (see also The burger bar comes to Barcelona and Bacoa for his fabulous foray into the world of takeaway burgers), with a wealth of experience in kitchens around the world. There is also an environmentally friendly takeaway service, whereby for a small deposit, you can have curry biked to your hotel in a neat layered tiffin tin.
The menu is based on Thai classics (masaman curry, pad thai), often with a twist – the red curry with roast duck is a superb variation on an old favourite. Dishes from other parts of Asia include a delicious laksa and tasty little rice-paper rolls with vegetables, tuna or prawn with minced meat. By default dishes come very mild (which is how the Catalans prefer it), so be sure to ask if you'd like your food spicy.
Surprisingly, given its fairly unpromising location on the side of a main road, Wushu manages to be smart, rustic and relaxed all at once, with heavy wood furniture, a loungey soundtrack and chicken-wire-fronted cupboards of Asian products.
Brad’s partner Paula runs a charming front-of-house operation, and keeps her team speedy and efficient.
Opposite the grand Gobierno Civil building, near the Estació de França railway station.
Mains are around 15 euros, but there are lunchtime menús for 9.70 euros and 12 euros.
