Best for Dining alone - Expert review of Tapioles 53
Australian chef Sarah Stothart won so much praise for her cooking at home (and I speak as one of the privileged few to experience it) that she set up a small restaurant to do it on a professional basis. It still has a homely feel, but with restaurant standards.
Sarah cooks according to what looks good in the market that day, so it’s hard to predict what might be on the menu, but her spinach and goat’s cheese gnocchi has become a signature dish, and I’ve also had great Moroccan food there, as well as scrumptious desserts (don’t miss the ginger and mascarpone cheesecake, if it’s on offer). To become a ‘member’, simply sign the book.
There are only six tables, in a cosy and fetching little dining room adorned with paintings by Sarah’s brother Ben.
Sarah will sit down and discuss the menu with you, and although the choices are limited, she’ll make every effort to accommodate any needs or whims.
Takes a little bit of effort to find, down a residential Poble Sec street, but is worth the effort.
There are two menus available, depending how hungry you are – one for 38 euros and one for 58 euros, plus wine.
