Expert review of El Atril

Australian-run bistro with tables on a lively square.

Barcelona could do with a few more places like El Atril, which gets most things right – atmosphere, music, waiters and, most importantly, flavoursome but unpretentious food. There’s live music on Sunday nights.

Food and drink:

The menu changes frequently, but a few dishes are perennials: my favourite is the mussels cooked in Belgian beer with shoestring fries, but you’ll also find kangaroo, red curry with prawns and a long list of tapas.

Ambience:

The small, stone-walled dining room is cool and atmospherically lit, and there are tables outside on the Plaça Sant Cugat.

Service:

The waiters are young and very charming.

Location:

In the heart of the Sant Pere neighbourhood, to the north of the Born.

Price advice:

Mains range from about 10-18 euros, or there’s a lunchtime menu for 10.80 euros.
