Expert review of Milos

Fancy fish restaurant in the Athens Hilton with great value lunch deals.

After wowing diners in Montreal and New York with his upmarket take on simple Greek seafood, Costas Spiliades opened a branch of Milos in the Athens Hilton in time for the 2004 Olympics. I’ve never had a bad – or even mediocre – meal here since. With its soaring ceilings and slick clientele, it’s a place for serious foodies who like to keep things simple. Spiliades sources the finest ingredients and let’s them shine with minimal interference. The fish baked in sea salt crust embodies his subtle style of cooking.

Food and drink:

Light and delicate regional flavours cooked in Spiliades’ own extra virgin olive oil are the order of the day. The focus is on fresh fish simply prepared, but there are fine Black Angus steaks for diehard carnivores. There’s a thoughtfully chosen selection of Greek and international wines, which you can pair with different dishes.

Recommended dishes:

The signature dish of wafer-thin courgettes and aubergines/eggplant flash fried and served with tzatziki and grilled cheese is utterly more-ish and as light as tempura. Carpaccio of fish with lime, coriander and chile is delicate with a kick. The beluga lentils with feta and smoked salmon and miniature pies filled with wild greens are also delicious. Desserts are surprisingly rich: the loukoumades (hot baby doughnuts) with orange zest, honey and cinnamon are lethal.

Ambience:

Modern but understated, the vast dining room is clearly designed to make businessmen feel comfortable. The white, cream and pale grey colour scheme is offset by the colourful display of fresh produce piled high around the open kitchen.

Service:

As polished as the cutlery and as professional as the business expense clientele.

Location:

Inside the Hilton Hotel, a short walk from Evangelismos Metro station.

Price advice:

A la carte is €50-80. Be aware that fish is priced by the kilo, which can bump up your bill if you order the catch of the day. Small sharing plates from €5. The set lunch deal (12.30-4.30pm) is fantastic value at around €25  for five courses, with plenty of appealing choices including sea bass sashimi, warm octopus salad with chickpeas and capers, and mini Black Angus burgers. Overall, it's the city's best deal.

Tables to book:

The chef’s table inside the open kitchen is a sure-fire way to impress larger groups. The terrace overlooking the pool, with its white-on-white decor and potted olive trees, is a peaceful oasis during the summer.
