Expert review of Vertigo
Vertigo takes its name from the famous Hitchcock film. Why? Well, it shares its premises - a rather grand neo-classical pavilion - with the EYE Film Institute Nederlands (formerly the Nederlands Filmmuseum), which screens art house and golden oldie films.
A big selection of international café fare - croissants and fruit shakes for breakfast, focaccia sandwiches, soups, burgers, Thai curry, tuna steaks..Like many people, I also come sometimes just for a beer, glass of wine or coffee - there's an extensive snacks menu, that includes Dutch bitterballen (moreish deep-fried meat-filled croquettes).
Occupying the building's basement, and decorated with movie posters, the café is very cosy. There are also outdoor terraces operating throughout the year. People sit outside nursing hot chocolates in the winter months, and on summer weekends something of a party atmosphere can take hold, with trendy Amsterdammers reclining for hours on beanbags and mattress-covered benches.
Fine. Self service outside.
In a scenic spot towards the Vondelpark's eastern end, overlooking a lake.
Sandwiches and soups 3.50-6 euros, main courses 12-20 euros.
