Expert review of Tempo Doeloe
I had my first rijsttafel - a 'rice table' of many little taster dishes - at Tempo Doeloe years ago. The restaurant has been around for over a quarter of a century, and is extremely popular (and small) - so bookings are essential any night of the week.
Go for a rijsttafel (a Dutch colonial speciality; it must be ordered by two minimum), and your table will be smothered in up to 25 tapas-sized dishes, served in little white pots. Tempo Doeloe's cooking is spicier than most of Amsterdam's Indonesian restaurants - watch out for those marked as hot or very hot on the menu. There is a vegetarian rijsttafel option, and you can order more conventional set meals, or a la carte. Leave room (tricky) for a slice of spekkoek (Indonesian layered cake) or the delicious mango dessert.
Intimate, verging on the cramped, and quite smart, with chandeliers and lots of white linen.
Solicitous, but can be overstretched at times.
One of a number of good places to eat on Utrechtsestraat, just south of the centre.
Per person, the full, 25-dish Rijsttafel Istemewa costs 37.5 euros. The 12-dish Rijsttafel Stimoelan costs 29.5 euros.
