Best for Outdoor dining - Expert review of Spanjer & Van Twist
I've eaten a number of times at this charming little canalside, food-oriented café, and it's always been a very pleasant experience. The food's good, the clientele civilized, and the setting lovely.
I've enjoyed a doorstopper of a goat's cheese with rhubarb jam sandwich for lunch, and spaghetti vongole and steak and chips for dinner (not on the same occasion). Other lunchtime options include interesting quiches and soups of the day. The more ambitious dinner menu might also offer shrimp cakes and ricotta pie. You can also drop in for just for a drink and a plate of bitterballen (deep-fried, breadcrumbed balls of pureed meat or cheese).
The very snug interior includes a dramatic, modern bar display, a communal reading table, and little mezzanine floor up precipitous steps. In fine weather, you can sit out on one of the city's loveliest canalside drinking and dining terraces - you're right by the water.
Good - friendly and efficient.
Facing one of the city's prettiest canals, in the western canal ring.
A bowl of soup or a sandwich at lunch will cost around 5 euros, quiche around 10 euros, and steak and chips for dinner around 18 euros.
