Best for Romance - Expert review of De Belhamel
De Belhamel offers a winning combination of very decent mostly French fare (a few Italian dishes crop up too), Art Nouveau style décor (in light fittings, wallpaper and murals), and a super location, with views across one canal (the Brouwersgracht), and right down another (the stately Herengracht).
I had an enjoyable meal here recently, that kicked off with a starter of prawn and scallop in puff pastry, then followed with a good confit de canard that fell off the bone, and finished with pannacotta with a blackberry sauce.
Romantic, with candles on intimate wooden tables.
Staff are young, friendly, efficient.
A lovely, tranquil canalside spot on the northern end of the canal ring.
The set three-course dinner menu, with a choice only for starters, costs 36 euros. Choose from the carte, and you're looking at around 45 euros. Lunch is much cheaper. Michelin has given De Belhamel a Bib Gourmand award for offering good value.
Those in the windows with canal views, or, when warm, out on the little terrace.
