Expert review of De Bakkerswinkel
The wholesome, home-made food and the generally healthy vibe that pervades De Bakkerswinkel are in interesting and marked contrast to the café's location - on a street just off the Red Light District. Be prepared to have to wait a little for a table at peak times (such as a Saturday lunchtime) at the entrance, by the mouth-watering displays of breads and cakes.
Breakfasts (served until noon) include home-made jams, breads and croissants, great coffee, and organic eggs and bacon. For lunch, I particularly recommend the quiches and fruit shakes, while the full-blown 'old English high teas' (scones and clotted cream etc) are also very popular.
The long, thin, café is split level, a bit funky looking (lime green walls), and it's all very easy going - you can opt to sit in Dutch fashion at a communal table, or at your own table on mini sofas.
Waitresses are young and charming. If it's busy, there can be a bit of a wait for food to arrive.
On Warmoesstraat, just off the Red Light District.
Quiche 5.20 euros, fruit shake 3.90 euros, cheesecake 3.95 euros. Full-blown teas from 13.95 euros.
There are two other less central branches - see the website for addresses.
