Expert review of Gula Gula
Gula Gula was the first restaurant I ate in when I visited Spain in 1999. I didn’t know then that I would live here, but when I finally made the moved a few months later I celebrated by going back to the restaurant. After a gap of a few years I thought I’d better check it out, and it was as good as it has ever been – and brought back sweet memories. I remembered the wafting sea breeze (it’s right beside the sea) and feeling very adventurous, not speaking a word of Spanish at the time. Now the menu has a good English translation. It is in an original fisherman’s house, with views of the sea from almost every angle, and must be one of the most photographed restaurants in Altea, with its bright red geranium filled windows and dappled arbor, where I sat on my first visit.
Have you ever looked at a menu and seen something you liked but wished it came with a sauce from another dish? At Gula Gula you can choose from a selection of sauces, including the wonderful green pepper with calvados. But sometimes the sauce on the menu is perfect, such as fig sauce served with loin of pork. The choice is almost too much; sole in sherry sauce, clam and skate rice, pink salad with prawns and fruit. I really must go back more often.
Charming and sea-breazy. Try and get a table under the bower during the summer.
