Chester flights

Flying to Chester

Chester doesn’t have its own airport so your two best options - to fly anywhere close to the city - are Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport. Manchester is, by a long way, the bigger and better served of the two. You’ll find great deals for flights using the Kayak booking tool above.

Where are the airports?

Liverpool John Lennon Airport: as the crow flies, the airport named after the Beatle is only about 10 miles away. However, the River Mersey gets in the way so a road journey is 25 miles and takes about 40 minutes.

Manchester Airport is a little over 30 miles from Chester and by road, takes about 45 minutes.

Getting to Chester from Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Taxi: The quickest, but most expensive, option is a taxi from the airport to Chester. There’s a Hackney cab rank directly outside the terminal doors. Cabs with “chip, PIN and go” signs on them can take payment by credit or debit card. Expect to pay £35 for the 40 minute journey. Pre-booked private hire cabs must pick up from the car parks.

Train and bus: Public transport isn’t an ideal option. You’ll have to get a bus from the airport to Liverpool Central rail station (around a 20 minute journey in the opposite direction) and then a train to Chester (single fare £4.60, return £6.15; every 30 minutes on quarter past and quarter to the hour; journey time – 41 minutes).

Getting to Chester from Manchester Airport

Taxi: Hackney cabs are lined up outside Manchester Airport’s three terminals. You can negotiate with the driver or pre-book a private car (same rule applies as Liverpool; the driver will have to use the car parks). Expect to pay around £50.

Train: Make your way to the airport’s train station and you’ll find about three trains an hour to Chester, though you’ll have to change at Crewe (single fare from £14.30, return from £15.40; around 1hr 30mins journey time).

Coach: National Express run coaches between the airport and Chester. Though the service is infrequent (three a day) it takes only 45 minutes and costs £6.80 for an adult single fare. If the coach times suit your flight times, this is a great option. Check www.nationalexpress.com.
