Dove Cottage, near Grasmere

By David Atkinson, your Grasmere expert

Why go to Grasmere?

For romantic bookworms.

Literary giants

William Wordsworth rented a cottage in tiny Grasmere during the late 18th century and it has been home to the Romantic literary movement ever since. The big-name attractions of his former homes and his family grave ensure his legacy is today writ large across the tiny, grass-valley hamlet. For more details, see my Lake District attractions page for more.

Country escapes

Grasmere’s tiny streets can be positively rammed with coaches in high season and the queues for a cream tea quite disheartening. Strike out into the nearby Langdale valleys to truly wander lonely as a cloud as Wordsworth would have done.
