Why go to Costa Adeje?

Out with the old…

The south of Tenerife has invested millions of euros in moving away from the ‘sell ‘em cheap, stack ‘em high’ package holiday destination of the 1980s to a chic winter playground for affluent Europeans. Where once great swathes of Playa de Las Américas lived, now the upmarket resort of Costa Adeje thrives, sweeping away all day British breakfasts and tacky souvenir shops in a rising tide of five-star hotels and designer label shopping. Welcome to the New Tenerife.

A beach a day on a week away

No less than seven beaches fringe roughly seven kilometres of Costa Adeje coastline from the fish restaurants of La Caleta to the barranco (ravine) which most people determine is where Las Américas starts. Bordered by a palm-lined promenade of restaurants, bars and shops, that’s a whole lot of sun and sandal-friendly space to enjoy.

Choice bites

From pizza and chips to gourmet dining, there are countless restaurants offering menus from around the world. When you fancy a change from your hotel dining room, choose the outstanding skills of chefs at the likes of Monte Christo and Coeur de Filet or try your taste buds on some typical Canarian cuisine and the pavement restaurants of Adeje town. Fish and seafood lovers should make a bee-line for the small cove of La Caleta where they’ll find alluring menus in equally alluring establishments overlooking the quiet bay.

Shopaholics are spoilt for choice

From the designer labels of the Plaza Del Duque shopping centre to the twice weekly flea market held opposite the Costa Adeje Gran Hotel , trend setters and bargain hunters can overdose on retail therapy.

Let me entertain you

Although Playa de Las Américas is the nightlife centre of the south, you’ll find plenty of live entertainment around San Eugenio. My pick of the crop are the beach setting of the In and Out Bar where you’ll find Soundchaser playing nightly, and family favourite, St Eugene’s where the dancefloor throngs to high quality cabaret. More in keeping with the Costa Adeje image is the landmark lighthouse of the aptly named El Faro Chill Art bar where the trendy head after midnight.

Marine life

Stroll around the moored yachts of Puerto Colón and take a cruise to watch dolphins and whales. Or indulge your 007 fantasies by straddling an underwater scooter and slipping your head into a BOB (Breathing Observation Bubble) to seek out and destroy submerged megalomaniacs disguised as stingrays.
