Hiring a car in Lanzarote

You’ll find the best rates through brokers or price comparison websites. See the Simonseeks booking tool above, powered by Kayak, and read the money-saving guide on Car Hire.

Why hire a car

Car hire in Lanzarote is relatively cheap, compared to the rest of Europe, with prices from around 15 euros a day for the smallest car. Prices usually include unlimited mileage and insurance, although it pays to check.

A car is essential if you want to see anything of the island other than the major towns and resorts independently (day trips organised by your hotel or travel agencies are of course an option). An increasing number of hotels on the island are found in the rural interior, for which a car is also necessary.

Car hire companies

There is a whole raft of other companies offering car hire from the airport, although to be sure of availability (particularly if you have a specific vehicle in mind - a compact car, perhaps or a people carrier), it makes sense to book in advance. You can also usually get much better deals online.

On my last trip, I used easyCar which has offices at Arrecife airport, as well as at the two major resorts of Costa Teguise and Puerto Del Carmen on Lanzarote. It has an easy online booking service with a good, clear design that is explicit about additional charges - which is not true of all car hire companies. Any car rental with easyCar also includes (according to information available at the time of writing) third party liability insurance, collision damage waiver, theft protection and location surcharges.

On the road

Roads are generally quiet and well signposted, although Lanzarote has a high accident rate compared to the rest of Europe, so take due care. Some accommodation and even visitor attractions and beaches are found at the end of bumpy dirt tracks, so take it slowly driving on these. Parking can be hard to find in the major resorts and even at major visitor attractions in peak season.

You must be over 21 (over 23 for some companies) to hire a car and be in possession of a full driving licence. Usually an additional driver can be added for no extra fee.

Rules of the road

Some basic rules of the road in Lanzarote include:

  • Drive on the right.
  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times.
  • It is illegal to use mobile phones.
