Cape Town car hire
Hiring a car in Cape Town
If you're planning on staying in the city for a week or more and if organised sightseeing trips aren't your thing, you might want to consider hiring a car. Cape Town's public transport system is sadly, not in line with other major cities around the world and as attractions are spread across a wide area, a car or transport is necessary if you'd like to see it all.
All the well-known and reputable car hire companies including Avis (www.avis.co.za), Hertz (www.hertz.co.za) and Budget (www.budget.co.za) can be found at Cape Town International Airport. They all have depots in the city too, if you only want a vehicle for part of your stay. You can pick up a car straight after arriving (book beforehand though especially for 4x4s or more unusual cars) and if needing a car while on holiday, the bigger setups will bring one to your hotel or guesthouse.
If driving a swish car is your thing then try Status Luxury Vehicles (www.slv.co.za), they’ll hook you up with a Ferrari, suitable sexy coupé or any number of luxury mobiles for your visit. On a budget? Try Value Car Hire (www.valuecarhire.co.za) and for a trip down memory lane, rent a 1970s Beetle from Best Beetle (www.bestbeetle.co.za). You’ll find the best rates through brokers or price comparison websites. See the Simonseeks booking tool above, powered by Kayak.
To hire a car in Cape Town you have to be over the age of 25 and you'll need an international driver's licence. You’ll also need a credit card for surety and it is advisable to take the insurance package.
For day trips and coastal jaunts, why not rent a moped or motorcycle? There are a few rental companies offering this service in the city, try Cape Town Scooter (www.capetownscooter.co.za). To hire these, international licences are necessary but they're less sticky on the over 25-years-old issue.
