Something's different – I can't quite put my finger on it...

OK, so the more observant among you will have noticed that the Simonseeks site has had a facelift - a new paint job if you like. Don't worry, we haven't made any scary changes to the functionality of the site, but for some time now we've been working towards strengthening our brand and generally giving the design a good tidy up.

I hope you find the changes so far an improvement, but we realise we've still got a long way to go, and we'd like the design to be driven by our community as well as us humble designer-type people. We're constantly coming up with new ideas for the site, and there's currently a lot of thought going in to some exciting new site tools and improved page layouts - including a new homepage and guide layout which you can look forward to in the near future. The design enhancements we're making now will give us a good base for these layouts; it's a work in progress.

It's always nice to know that our work is appreciated, but be it good or, dare I say it, downright scathing, I'd love to hear your feedback. I'm fairly new to Simonseeks, but it's amazing how quickly I've been swept up by the enthusiasm of the team and the community. Yes, I realise it's a cliché, but I honestly believe we're building something really special - and here's your chance to get involved.

I'm looking forward to hearing your comments so please leave them below. Come on, I can take it!

Photographing hotels and similar can be tricky, and proprietors can get VERY agitated if they think you've portrayed their pride and joy poorly - I do quite a bit of this sort of photography for a living. May be best to ask first, or show them the pic before uploading it. Most places will have pictures from adverts. How about guide writers getting in touch with the hotels they're covering and asking for a preferred pic to be sent to them and adding this image to their copy?

Hi Paul,

I would be happy to upload hotel images myself as I do think this would improve the appeal of articles.

Keep us updated on this one!

I think the writer's own images would be a great touch - it's hard to describe the inside of a Japanese Ryokan to anyone who has never been in one so I took lots of photographs as it was so new to me and I wanted to be able to convey the aesthetics to my friends and family who were interested.

I really like the new look Simonseeks! Subtle changes but the pages look much brighter and more inviting. I think it's already an easy site to navigate but look forward to seeing more improvements, like more hotel images - of the 5 hotels I have included in my articles only 2 have images. This would not only aid customers but might also help to boost your writer's earning potential too!
Keep up the good work though. I'm sure Simonseeks will continue to grow with such an enthusiastic team behind it.

Hi Lee,

An interesting point regarding hotel images. It's something we're constantly trying to improve but there's a limit to what we can do due to the size of the team. Our accommodation list is well past the 100k mark and finding all the information for each place is a massive task.

We've discussed in the past whether we should let our writers upload images of the accommodation they want to recommend to supplement our existing image stock. Would that be a feature that you'd use?

Sorry John, not trying to hijack your thread!

I'm so glad I looked at this blog. I've been driving myself nuts trying to get my pics of 2 hotel recommendations over to the right place! So it's not my job!!! I see the point about getting a pic that doesn't upset the owners, but it didn't occur to me. Any way of submitting pics to you, to be vetted?
