How to promote your guides on Facebook

Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites in the world, making it a great place for you to promote your travel guides and increase your guide views! Here are some tips on where to start:

1. Add your guide/Simonseeks page to your Facebook profile

I would suggest adding the URL to your Simonseeks profile page or the URL’s to your individual guides (or both) to the ‘basic information’ section on your Facebook profile page. Here’s how:

Just click on the ‘edit my profile’ link (top left hand corner), then click on ‘Contact Information’ (on the left hand side) and add your profile URL and it should increase your guide views!

2. Post your guides on your Facebook profile

When your guide has been uploaded to Simonseeks you can promote it on Facebook from the guide page. One way is to click on the ‘Like’ button (this is located underneath the guide intro) and/or you can click on the ‘Share on Facebook’ link which is located on the toolbar at the bottom of the page.

What’s the difference between the ‘Like’ button and the ‘Share on Facebook’ button?

If you click on the ‘Like’ button to promote your guide then it will show a single line entry on your wall under the ‘Recent Activity’ section. For example:

If you click on the ‘Share on Facebook’ link on the toolbar it will add an image from your guide as well as a snippet from your guide (normally the intro) – you will then have the option to also include a comment. For example:

I personally think that your guides are best promoted through the ‘Share on Facebook’ link as it includes an image as well as a snippet which will be more eye catching in your friends news feed on Facebook than if you ’Like’ the guide – however, there is nothing stopping you from doing both!

3. Promote your guides on the Simonseeks Facebook page

You can even promote your guides on the Simonseeks Facebook page. Just copy your guide URL, visit the Simonseeks Facebook page, click on ‘Link’ (found at the top of the wall) and paste your guide link and click ‘Attach’.

Whether you’re promoting your guide on your personal Facebook page or the Simonseeks page, it’s always best to leave a comment. You can do this in different ways - one of the best ways is to format your comment as a question to encourage some interaction, for example:

4. Ask friends to help

Why not get your friends to promote your guides on Facebook too? There is another link on the Simonseeks toolbar called ‘Email a friend’, you can use this to send your guide to your friends via email and ask them to promote it on their Facebook profiles.

5. Join relevant groups & ‘like’ relevant pages

Join relevant groups e.g. if you’ve written a guide on Chester then search for Chester Facebook groups - you can join these groups and then post your guide URL along with a comment because it will be useful information to people that are members of that group.

‘Like’ relevant pages e.g. if you’ve written a guide on Chester and in that guide you’ve recommend a particular restaurant, see if it has a Facebook page, if it does then ‘like’ it and post your guide URL on their page explaining in the comment that you’ve recommend the particular restaurant in your guide. You can always contact the restaurant first if you feel a bit cheeky posting a link to your guide on their Facebook page.

I hope this has given you some ideas on how to promote your guides on Facebook and increase your guide views. Hi,
Good tips but I don't have a "share on facebook" option at the bottom of the page?

Thanks for giving such a nice info. I'll make sure to try and use these tips for my next guide.

Hi Sally- great advice. I've been doing something similar with Twitter as I only have a small range of friends on Facebook but you can obviously increase these as you've suggested. Will take you up on this in a week or so's time. I'm off to Nottingham to assist with daughters house move tomorrow, then the Algarve on Monday. As often stated my PC is rubbish but we can finally afford a laptop when we get back so looking forward to that. Cheers!

Hi Johanna - sounds good, you'll have to let me know how you get on with promoting your guides on Facebook & Twitter and if you need any help when you get back just let me know! Hope everything goes well with your daughters house move and have a lovely time in the Algarve (at least you can escape the horrible UK weather for a bit). Thanks.
