Edinburgh hotels

Edinburgh is a diverse and cosmopolitan city and as result the accommodation available reflects this.

There are literally thousands of places available to stay in Edinburgh and as a visitor it can seem quite daunting. But rest assured as a long term resident
I know the place like the back of my hand and have covered the entire spectrum from 5 star well known brands to small individual boutique hotels with some excellent B&B and hostels to boot. Serviced apartments are becoming more popular in the city as they offer a greater degree of freedom especially if travelling with a group or younger children so I have also included some of these as an option.

Things to consider before booking:

• Location, location, location. If you know what side of the city you are likely to be spending most of your time then consider this when booking.
• Edinburgh, despite it's size, is a very safe, clean city and there are very few areas to avoid. Certainly all the options I offer here are in good areas where walking to and from, no matter what time of day or night, is not a problem.
• June is when Edinburgh International Film Festival kicks off so accommodation will be at a premium.
• August is incredibly busy. Hotels are booked up sometimes a year in advance as the Edinburgh Festival,  fringe and jazz festival all take place.
• Christmas and New Year get booked up early as Edinburgh hosts a massive street party, German market and fair over the festive season.
• If you can travel Off-season (mid-January to mid-March and mid-October to mid-December) it will be considerably cheaper to stay in the City.
• Last minute off-season bookings put you in a very strong position to haggle. The first quote you receive is seldom the last.
• If accommodation in the city is scare or prohibitively expensive in high season don't discount exploring options a little further afield. There is an excellent train and bus service and some lovely seaside towns e.g. North Berwick  within easy striking distance. Or if you prefer a more urban environment Glasgow is a mere 40 minutes by train.
• Rugby is a passion in the City and as a result rugby international weekends are booked up very early as supporters teams travel all over Europe to go to Murrayfield  to see the match and enjoy a party weekend. 12th, 27th Feb, 19th March 2011 are the ones to watch next year.

I have picked my hotels as places I would recommend happily to my friends and family. And if you knew my friends and family you'd know I don't take that task lightly!
