Sleek and sexy. Fun and occasionally furry. A Capri 5-star to die for.

There is a vast amount of accommodation available in Naples and around, from cheap B&Bs and fabulous agriturismi (usually family-run with a few rooms and home-cooking created with own-grown fruit and vegetables, and often chicken and meat from hand-raised animals) to some of the classiest hotels in the world.

My advice is to pick the area you want to stay in, and use the Simonseeks' booking tool to find the best prices.

Hotels on the islands of Ischia and Capri often greatly reduce their rates towards the end of the season when ferries are less reliable and some of the shops and restaurants are closed for winter. Always check to see if breakfast is included; an additional 25 euros for breakfast will soon make that €100-a-night hotel seem a little less of a bargain.

The places that I'm recommending are all options that I would happily stay at myself. I've tried to include a range, from basic and budget, through to a few 'once in a lifetime' splash-out options, so that you can choose one according to your pocket and priorities. As a rule I've tended to treat myself when staying in Naples – I always feel as though I need some luxury after a long day spent at Pompeii or wandering the city streets – but I might scale down once I reach the Amalfi Coast or the islands when my days are likely to be more relaxing. That said, some of the places I've stayed at along the Amalfi Coast and on the islands are so special that they're worth spending just a night in to see how a hotel should really be run. I've included some old-school grand hotels, converted convents and palazzi, stylish boutique hotels and charming farmhouse accommodation.

My choices all offer something special, whether excellent service, fabulous breakfasts, stunning views, exquisite style, a charming terrace or even a hammock. I haven't included many chains for this reason but, occasionally, you might just want a reasonably-priced room close to the station or the port, so there are a few of those in there too.

If you find somewhere special that I haven't listed, and can bear to give away the secret, do let me know and I'll try and check it out on my next visit…

Simonseeks has given star ratings out of five for all accommodation recommendations. With hotels, these will tally with the hotel's official star rating where it exists. Where a hotel has no official star rating, and in the case of b & bs and hostels, the experts have made a judgment as to how many stars the accommodation deserves, in terms of comfort, level of facilities and so forth.
