Naples hotels

There is a vast amount of accommodation available in Naples, from cheap B&Bs and fabulous palazzi to some of the classiest hotels in the world. A couple of tips when booking:

* Hotels around the central station tend to be a bit cheaper, thanks to the often insalubrious surroundings.

* It's worth noting that out of season (summer, when it can get very humid, and from January to March) hotel prices can drop drastically. Hotels on the islands of Ischia and Capri also greatly reduce their rates from late October when ferries are less reliable and some of the shops and restaurants are closed for winter.

* Always check to see if breakfast is included; an additional 25 euros for breakfast will soon make that €100-a-night hotel seem a little less of a bargain.

The places that I'm recommending are all options that I would happily stay at myself. I've tried to include a range, from basic and budget through to a few 'once in a lifetime' splash-out options, so that you can choose one according to your pocket and priorities. Some options are better for those who like to travel independently and don't require much help with anything (such as Villa Scarpariello in Ravello), others offer services such as a local Neapolitan to take you around to visit all the places you want to go to but wouldn't want to do on your own (such as B&B Chiaia in Naples). Then there are those that are a little bit out of the way for those who'd prefer to travel to the sights rather than stay in the centre. 

As a rule I've tended to treat myself when staying in Naples – I always feel as though I need a bit of luxury after a long day spent at Pompeii or wandering the city streets – but I might scale down once I reach the Amalfi Coast or the islands when my days are likely to be more relaxing. That said, some of the places that I've stayed at along the Amalfi Coast and on the islands are so special that they're worth spending just a night in to see how a hotel should really be run. I've included some old-school grand hotels, converted convents and palazzi , stylish boutique hotels and charming farmhouse accommodation. My choices all offer something special, whether excellent service, fabulous breakfasts, stunning views, exquisite style, a charming terrace or even a hammock. I haven't included many chains for this reason but, occasionally, you might just want a reasonably priced room close to the station or the port, so there are a few of those in there too.
