Expert review of The Imperial Riding School Vienna
Every time I see this hotel's name I wonder whose idea it was - I suffer from a horse allergy and even writing the name makes me want to sneeze! A few years back it was called the Renaissance Penta. Nevertheless, this is an extraordinary establishment with a long history to it. This huge neoclassical building, once built to house the military horsemen together with their steeds – hence the name – was transformed into this luxurious, refined and well-appointed hotel 20 years ago. Although this is primarily a business, event and group hotel there are excellent bargains to be had for individuals during off-season periods throughout the year. It's the recreational facilities, the pool, the elegant décor and luxury feel to the house that makes this one of my favourites.
There's a train station almost immediately behind the building – don't let this put you off - that has an almost direct service (S7) to and from the airport for less than 4 euros. The S Bahn (S stands for schnell which means fast) is a great way to travel quickly from one side of Vienna to the other using inexpensive public transport. This station “Rennweg” also connects with tram 71 which gets you to the city centre in a matter of minutes. The beautiful Russian Orthodox Church that is visible as you reach the hotel entrance is a real eye catcher.
Pastel coloured walls contrast nicely with warm greens, yellows and red coloured fabrics throughout most of the 360 rooms. Please note: there are two wings to this hotel and one section is less well appointed. Accommodation is air conditioned, and most rooms have a flat-screen TV, new beds, soundproof windows and spacious bathrooms – some with both tub and separate shower. Club rooms and suites come with an included breakfast, snacks and beverages.
There is a generous amount of space in this huge hotel. The lobby is extensive and inviting - good for relaxing, just meeting friends or sitting and reading newspapers. There's a library too.
There are lots to options to choose from so there's never an overcrowded feel to the place. Snacks are served at the lobby bar, an Austrian style pub offers business lunches and an outdoor terrace is open for breakfast and dinner. Chill out to good music and enjoy snacks in the trendy outdoor lounge.
The hotel pool and gym can also be used by paying guests who are not staying in the hotel. This means that it can get busy. There's an extra charge for use of the sauna and steam room.
Very competent and accommodating, the staff members are used to dealing with lots of people and I have found them very helpful most times.
Business travellers, tour groups, airline staff, honeymooners, leisure travellers and singles.
