Best views of the Grand Harbour of any hotel in Malta, and perfectly placed for sightseeing.
In a superb location on the edge of historic Valletta overlooking the Grand Harbour, The British is the longest established family-run hotel in Malta and one of only four hotels within the walls of the capital. Valletta is a magical place to stay if you enjoy history and wandering – catching the glimpses most tourists miss. The British, perched almost on top of Valletta’s massive fortifications, is minutes from everything. A refurb would turn this into one of the best hotels in Malta. Then again – the prices would go up.
Location:
First class. Set amongst historic buildings of warm local sandstone high above the Grand Harbour. Walking distance to all the sites and restaurants of the capital and a few minutes from the island’s main bus station (and cab rank), giving cheap and easy access to the rest of the country.
Bedrooms:
44 en suite rooms, basic and tired but clean and adequate. All rooms have a fan; aircon costs extra. Sea view rooms have balconies with panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. They may be a bit scruffy but if you are looking out at these views with a drink in your hand, you probably won’t notice!

Public areas:
1970/80s' décor – not retro, original. Brown ‘leather’ sofas that have seen better days. The bar, restaurant and terrace, though, have that captivating Grand Harbour view. Free WiFi.
Eating and drinking:
Nothing special – apart from the fabulous views. There are also lots of good cafes and restaurants in Valletta within a few minutes.
Service:
The small team is well informed, friendly and particularly helpful. Reception is open 24 hours.
