Expert review of Old Trafford Lodge
This is the place to be when there is a test match or a one-day international on at Old Trafford Cricket Ground as executive rooms have balconies overlooking the pitch. The last time I visited it was just a few days before England played Australia and, although I didn’t see a match from my room, it was quite exciting watching the players training.
In Old Trafford Cricket Ground, and just a short walk to Old Trafford football stadium, the hotel is perfectly located for visitors with a sporting break in mind. Manchester’s city centre is easy to reach via the efficient metro (the nearest stop is Old Trafford) and the shopaholic’s Mecca, The Trafford Centre, is a 10-minute drive from the hotel.
There are two types of room – standard and executive. Both are identical in terms of size and facilities but only the executive rooms boast balconies with an enviable view of the pitch. For me, this view is the hotel’s selling point and I would pay the £5 supplement for an executive room every time (this supplement goes up on match days). Executive rooms also benefit from all of the natural light the floor-to-ceiling balcony doors throw in, while standard rooms can be a little dark. Rooms are clean and functional, and are all en suite (with a shower only). I like the cricket-themed artwork on the walls of each bedroom. Previously, a marquee just outside the hotel could be noisy. However, it has now gone and has been replaced by The Point – a new conference and banqueting facility – so night-time disturbances shouldn’t be a problem.

There is a small bar next to reception with a seating area. Locally-themed modern artwork is dotted about the corridor walls.
Sandwiches and wraps are on sale behind the bar and take out menus are provided if guests would like a more substantial meal. A Continental Breakfast is also served in the bar seating area.
The staff are friendly and helpful.

Cricket fans who love being at the heart of the action. Football fans also like the short walk to Old Trafford. During the week business people visiting local companies mix with tourists, and at the weekend couples and families enjoy the views of the pitch.
Look out for deals as room rates, including breakfast, drop during quiet weekends. Rates soar for one-day international matches though and rooms go quickly for these events so book in advance. Parking just outside the hotel is free.
