Ancient stonework and contemporary design combine in this chic boutique hotel in the old town.
In Roman times, the vestibule was the ceremonial entrance into Emperor Diocletian’s private residential quarters. Today, on the same spot, the Vestibul Palace sports 21st-century design – I love the way it combines sleek wood, glass, chrome and leather with the rough hewn stonework of the ancient walls. It’s a real splurge but worth it – the location and staff make this hotel a truly exceptional experience.
Location:
The main building stands just off the Roman peristyle, within the walls of Diocletain’s Palace in Split’s UNESCO-listed old town. The Villa Dobric annex lies a five-minute walk away. All the city’s main cultural attractions are within a 10-minute walk from the hotel properties, as are the airport bus and the ferry port.
Bedrooms:
In the main building, there are two singles, three doubles and two suites, all with wooden floors and exposed ancient stone and brickwork, played off against modern minimalist furniture. The luxury suite has a spacious open-plan living area with the bed up on a mezzanine. There are an additional four rooms in the Villa Dobric annex, likewise with wooden floors and chic minimalist furnishing.

Public areas:
The main building has a small café and restaurant with tables outside on a peaceful little square in the shade of big white parasols.
Eating and drinking:
The hotel serves a delicious breakfast with plenty of fruit, freshly baked bread, warm almond-filled croissants, and eggs cooked-to-order, plus frothy cappuccino. There is an a la carte dinner menu featuring gourmet dishes prepared from local seasonal ingredients.
Leisure facilities:
None, but if you ask at reception they can help you arrange local sports activities such as scuba diving, sailing and white-water rafting.
Service:
Incredibly friendly and helpful staff – they’ll help carry your luggage, park your car and arrange local excursions. Excellent waiter service too.
