Expert review of Hostal Drago
You couldn't ask for a simpler, better-value hotel in the nerve centre of Sotogrande - Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro. While I found it difficult to find one single frill, the family-run hotel sits in a quiet street near to all the area's best shops and restaurants, and has its own bar area. Named after an ancient tree in Tenerife, the family of four brothers and their mother bend over backwards to look after their guests.
In the heart of Pueblo Nuevo, which is where all the Sotogrande residents do their shopping and often eat out.
The 15 bedrooms are impeccably clean, simple and quiet, with double glazing, air-conditioning and basic bathrooms. The floors are marble and the walls a neutral beige. All rooms have new mattresses and proper cotton sheets.
The only public part of the hotel is the decent-sized bar area, off which the family live. This is where you have your breakfast and get yourself a coffee and a tapa for the rest of the day.
No restaurant, but you take your simple breakfast in the sunny bar area.
Service is friendly, welcoming and hospitable. I got chatting to the family one day in the bar and spent the next three hours there, and left feeling I'd made a load of new friends.
Families on a budget break, tradesmen and business people working around Sotogrande.
This place really is a steal.
